LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT VISIONS AND DESTINIES, BEING THE TEXT OF THE GOODWILL MESSAGE DELIVERED ON BEHALF OF THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF NITP, TPL. LUKA B. ACHI BY TPL. TOYIN AYINDE, 2ND NATIONAL VICE-PRESIDENT AT THE ATOPCON AGM 2017 HELD ON THURSDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER, 2017 AT ACADEMY INN, AGIDINGBI, LAGOS.
I would like to express the best wishes of the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Tpl. Luka Bulus Achi FNITP, to this distinguished audience, and convey his apology for his unavoidable absence in this year’s Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria’s Annual General Meeting. He had been presiding in the last three days over the Institute’s affairs, rising from the Management Meeting, National Executive Committee Meeting and the National Council Meeting, all happening within two days. He has also been involved in follow-up activities which make it impossible for him to be physically present; some of these have to do with the forthcoming Conference. So, while he is here in spirit, he has mandated me to do the physical expression of himself through this goodwill message.
The Message It is a great delight to be amongst Private Practitioners of the Urban and Regional Planning profession at a most important time in our history. I call it history because whatever is done today always becomes a subject of history tomorrow. It is an occasion when we review leadership, assess the performance of the previous and usher in a new set in the hope that our decision will yield positive results for all of us. Leadership is a prime issue in our times and the need for responsive and responsible leadership cannot be overemphasized.
Leadership is expected to give direction, which is why it is important to ensure that those who come into leadership are those who know the direction to go.
An ignorant leadership would ultimately spell doom for the whole organization because when the blind lead the blind, they all will end up in the ditch. It is therefore important to note that leadership is about visions and destinies. So many lives are tied to the need for this profession to succeed, especially for those in private practice, those who cannot be employed by governments or their agencies and have taken up their destinies in their own hands. This is the class of people gathered here today.
Each individual firm and registered planners represented here today have a vision, a yearning for success, a buoyant practice, stress-free living that enables them to fufill their God-given destinies. Each individual present here has hopes, very high ones at that, to handover a legacy to their own of springs, a legacy of sound education, positive societal values, and success in this profession is esteemed to make their dreams come true.
As ATOPCON therefore arrives at another pedestal of ushering in new leadership, the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners wishes to encourage the Association to bring in people of value and vision who would help in furthering its Aims and Objectives. NITP encourages the new leadership to possess courage, without which no meaningful progress will be achieved.
Now, more than ever, this profession needs courageous leaders. We need leaders who can confront evil practices, those who can set right deviant professionals, leaders who can stand against sharp practices and leaders who would look you in the face and tell you the truth. Righteousness is said to exalt a nation while sinful living is quick to pull it down. It is uprightness that will make this profession remain upstanding, and that the new leadership must pursue.
The NITP wishes to express its continuous support for the Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria and we also look forward to it waxing stronger under the new leadership. We would like to congratulate the outgoing administration, and indeed previous administrations that have contributed to the present positioning of the Association. We wish you successful deliberations, free and fair elections and hope to work together to continually lift up our chosen profession. We look forward to seeing you all at the NITP Annual Conference and AGM in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State from 23rd to 27th October, 2017.
Thank you and God bless the Profession of Urban and Regional Planning; God bless Nigerian Institute of Town Planners; God bless Town Planners’ Registration Council, and God bless Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria.
