HAPPY WORLD TOWN PLANNING DAY!
The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners today joins other nations in celebrating World Town Planning Day which is usually marked on the 8th November of every year. This unique date, which was initiated in 1949,
is being celebrated globally.
The Institute in celebrating this year’s event hereby appeals to all Stakeholders at various levels of government, including policy makers, implementing organs and agencies, professionals, and the general public to embrace Town Planning principles and practices. There is need for a conscious shift from merely paying lip service to physical planning to taking head on the challenges confronting our physical and, even, economic environment by adopting the principles and practices that promote sustainable settlements which is the focus of SDG 11.
This clarion call is also in view of the rise in environmental disasters such as flooding, air and water pollution, tremors, soots, etc. which have devastated our land in the last few months, further depleting our collective resources, but which are clearly avoidable.
The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, on its own, would continue to emphasize the need for physical planning as the only way to organized living and promote the role of planning in creating livable communities.
On this World Town Planning Day, NITP calls on the Federal, State and Local Governments to emulate world’s best practices in creating environments where citizens can Live, Work and Play. Anything short of following these principles can only lead to further chaos. No Planning, No Living.
