The world is known to have gone beyond seven (7) billion population figure. More than half of this population live in urban areas. Rapid urbanization which transcended from the 20th century to the 21st century has magnified the challenges of cities and the capacity to manage them (spanning between human capital to technology and financial demands). While rapid urbanization continues to facilitate unabated concentration of population and economic growth in cities, creating better opportunities for livelihood, at the same time cities face daunting challenges such as overcrowding, poverty, and environmental decay, inefficient systems of municipal service delivery, scarce finance and inefficient administration.
This informed the choice of the theme of discussion for the National Conference for 2014. It is to generate professional discourse and brain-storming on global best practices and emerging concepts and strategies concepts and strategies in managing the growing cities. The Conference aims to bring together leading academicians, scientists, urban administrators, professionals in practice, researchers, research scholars, politicians at all the tiers of government, consultants, ICT Specialists and service providers to exchange and share their experiences and research results as well as dialogue on all aspects of City Planning and Management. It will provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns, practical challenges encountered and the solutions for city management in the developing countries.
