Report: NITP Abuja Chapter Celebrates Town Planning Week, 26-28 September

NEWS FROM THE STATES | NITP FCT ABUJA, CHAPTER.
Report from Tpl (Mrs) Queen I PHILLIPS. PRS Abuja Chapter.

The Abuja Chapter had her Town Planners week with the Theme ” MAKING ABUJA A SMART CITY ” The activities lasted for three days i.e 26th to 28th of September 2017.

The Chairman of NITP FCT Chapter, Tpl Mukhtar U Mohammed in his welcome address, highlighted that the theme was deliberate considering the feat by the FCT in the IBM smart city challenge and that the presentations and deliberations will be packaged and submitted to the FCTA as the Chapter’s contribution to making Abuja a smart city.

Activities that took place during the week includes Sensitisation / Courtesy visits to various ministries and government agencies, City walk, Visit to secondary schools, Press conferences, Novelty match and the Epoch event which was the paper presentations.

Papers presented were:-
1. Concepts, principles and approaches in developing a smart city by Tpl Prof.J B Kalto ( Urban and Regional Planning Dept. Faculty of Environmental Technology, Abubakar Tafawa balewa University, BAUCHI)

2. Transformation of Abuja into a smart city, potentials and challenges by Tpl Kabir M Yari, FNITP, PPNITP.

3. Abuja-FCT Resilient -smart city by Mr Solomon Gusah, (Executive Secretary, Nigeria Resilient cities Network, Nigeria.)

There was also a speech by Dr Limota Goroso Giwa, Urban Thinker Campus Program (UTC).

The papers highlighted amongst others:-
1.Concept of a smart city
2.Components of smart cities
3.Principles of smart city development
4.Smart city approaches
5.Benefits of smart cities
6.Roadmap to be coming a smart city
7.Transformation of Abuja into a smart city, the challenges and opportunities for planners.

There were also panels of discussant each Chaired by eminent personality of the profession and other stake holders, such as private sector, real estate developers , Brains & Hammer and Urban Shelter.

The Conference which was well attended had the Honorable Minister of Environment Alh. Ibrahim U Jibrin, Tpl Ahmed Mohammed who represented the National President of NITP, Tpl. Saka Olajide, Tpl. Yahaya Abubakar, Tpl. Umar Shuaibu, Amina Agella, Engr Adeyemi Kings (NCC), Mr Zakariya Abdulaziz(NIMET), Tpl. Aminat Salawu, Tpl. Morenike Babalola fnitp, Tpl Zuliha’u Ahmed and a host of others in attendance.

The Conference had 341 registered participants in attendance.
